behind the scenes
Explore the making of our ceramics
HANDCRAFTED
UNIQUENESS
Bananaceramics products are made in our Dutch lab, from the first sketches to the final refinements. Beginning with in-depth research and a myriad of sketches, we explore and refine our designs to perfection. The crafting is completely handmade, with each item emerging as a unique work of art, bearing subtle distinctions that celebrate their individuality and enhance their emotional allure. After drawing the object, we create the clay slabs, then cut and assemble them. But this is just the start of our creative journey.
CLAY. FROM CORE
TO SURFACE
Designing large geometric items is a defining aspect of our style, but it challenges clay physical possibilities. We craft our products from sturdy, highly grogged stoneware clay. Grog, composed of granular material from crushed pre-fired ceramics, not only prevents structural collapse but also minimizes warping. Since grogged clay has a coarse texture, we meticulously refine it with multiple layers of smooth stoneware clay, elevating the tactile quality and comfort. Finally, we meticulously polish the surface.
DRYING, A TEST
OF PATIENCE
When it comes to substantial clay objects, there’s no rushing the process – they require weeks of careful drying before they can be fired. Our pieces undergo a slow and deliberate drying process in a dedicated room, shielded from any drafts. We gradually unwrap and periodically monitor them. Only after this period do they undergo the transformation into ceramics.
COLOR AND FIRE
After the object has fully dried, it undergoes a firing process in our electric kiln. Following this initial firing, it is meticulously diamond-sanded and color is applied through gun-spraying and/or painting, depending on its shape. Subsequently, the ceramic piece is fired once more to ensure the color adheres permanently. The final touch involves protecting the piece with a specialized impregnator.
